The method does not remove pitting, even so it typically makes for a very shootable barrel.They shoot most accuretly if the clearance is .003 or less. That's a pretty snug fit and can be pretty hard to load in a fouled bore. Then I use a scale that has very fine measurement and also measures in pretty much all different units but I use grains. You're right in saying that you will have to experiment with your gun to find out for sure. Most of my .54's do fine for deer with .530 roundball in .015 patch over 80 grains of 3f Swiss. I flooded the wood with solution and let it dry in the sun for 20 minutes.A 1:48 twist in larger calibers (.45 and up) is generally very finicky in what it will shoot accurately with. Ask any serious Buffalo match or bench rest shooter what the twist is in their rifles. Invariably they will be 1:66; 1:72 or even 1:144.At my last range session, I shot a 4 inch group at 75 yards off my elbows (no bags) with a .50 caliber Traditions Kentucky. The load was 50 grains of Pyrodex P (3f), cotton patch with spit and beeswax/olive oil lube and a .490 home cast round ball. Next time, I hope to remember and take the sand bags.Much more than a modern firearm that has had 200 rounds through it. Use lubes like olive oil or crisco or whatever you like best while you're shooting to keep the fouling soft enough to re-load. Even the small amount of wax in my paper fiber wads helps a lot to keep the fouling soft.40 Cal. There are many variables to consider when working up a load for any muzzleloading rifle. The patent breech in percussion guns is safer and easier to clean. Drum and nipple breeches are manure from several perspectives. Most modern patent breeches on the factory made guns are designed to be cheap to make and install. I believe the Nock antechamber breech gives better velocity but experience is limited.. I bought a Sitting Fox Pennsylvania in .54 cal smoothbore. It was my third kit, the first two were Dixie. They have good quality parts, but the kit needs work, and you must have tools. Mine is iron mounted, single trigger, straight barrel, and I browned everything. It has been very reliable.Much more than a modern firearm that has had 200 rounds through it. Use lubes like olive oil or crisco or whatever you like best while you're shooting to keep the fouling soft enough to re-load. My usual load is 80-85 grs. Goex FFg with a Hornady swaged .495" round ball with .018" mink oil lubed patch. With a witness I once-upon-a-time was able to pull off a 3 shot cloverleaf at 100 yards.
